Your phone gets hot during games because they work the processor, the graphics chip, the screen and often the radio all at once, for long stretches, inside a sealed case with no fan. Warm is normal. Too hot shows up as a dimmer screen, a dropping frame rate, charging that stops, or a temperature warning. Apple says iPhones are designed for surrounding temperatures between 0 and 35°C (32 to 95°F). The quickest fixes are to stop charging while you play, take off a thick case, lower the brightness and graphics settings, and give the phone a break out of the sun.
Why do games make phones hot? #
The chips run flat out #
A 3D game redraws the whole scene dozens of times a second, which keeps the graphics chip and processor near full speed. Most apps only work that hard for a moment. A game does it for as long as you play.
High refresh rates double the work #
A 120 Hz screen shows twice as many frames per second as a 60 Hz one. In a game that actually runs at 120 frames per second, that’s roughly twice the rendering, and more heat.
The screen itself #
A bright screen draws a lot of power, and power turns into heat. Gaming at full brightness in daylight is one of the hottest things you can ask a phone to do.
Charging while you play #
Charging warms the battery on its own. Add a demanding game and you’re stacking two heat sources in the same spot.

Where you are #
Direct sun, a hot car, a thick case, or a pillow or blanket under the phone all stop heat escaping. Apple specifically advises against long stretches of graphics-heavy gaming in direct sunlight or in parked cars.
What is thermal throttling? #
When a phone gets too hot, it protects itself by slowing down. According to Apple’s temperature guidance, an overheating iPhone may slow or stop charging, dim or black out the display, temporarily disable camera features, and lower performance, including frame rates. Android phones have similar protections.

How hot is too hot? #
Warm to the touch during a long session is normal. Stop and let the phone cool if you see any of these:
- A temperature warning. On iPhone it reads “Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down.”
- The screen dimming on its own, or charging pausing.
- The phone is uncomfortable to hold.
Apple’s advice for an overheating iPhone is to turn it off, move it somewhere cooler and out of direct sunlight, and give it time. Never put a phone in the fridge or freezer to cool it, because condensation can form inside. And if a phone’s back or screen starts to bulge, stop using it and get it checked, since that can mean a swollen battery.
9 ways to stop your phone overheating while gaming #
- Unplug it while you play. Charge first, then play, or take breaks while it charges.
- Take off the case for long sessions, especially thick or rugged ones.
- Turn the brightness down. Even a small drop helps.
- Lower the game’s graphics settings. Many games let you reduce quality, shadows or the frame rate. Medium settings often look almost the same and run much cooler.
- Cap the refresh rate. On iPhones with ProMotion, Low Power Mode limits the display to 60 Hz, Apple says. On Android, look under Display settings for a refresh-rate or motion-smoothness option. The name varies by phone.
- Close other heavy apps. Navigation, video calls and screen recording running in the background all add heat.
- Use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data for online games when you can.
- Keep it out of the sun and off soft surfaces. A table or your hands let heat escape. A blanket doesn’t.
- Take breaks. Five minutes off every half hour lets the phone recover before it starts throttling.
Does heat damage the battery? #
Over time, yes. Heat is one of the main things that ages lithium-ion batteries faster, which is why phones slow charging when they’re hot. An occasional warm session won’t hurt, but regularly gaming while charging in a hot room will wear the battery sooner than it needs to.
Which games heat phones the most? #
The hottest games are big 3D ones: open-world adventures, shooters and racing games, especially at high frame rates. How to make your battery last longer while gaming #
- Use Low Power Mode or battery saver for casual games. They won’t notice the lower refresh rate much.
- Play offline games in airplane mode when you don’t need a connection. The radio is one of the bigger power users.
- Turn down brightness and sound, and turn off vibration if the game has a setting for it.
- Lower the frame rate in games that offer it.
